Chapter 17

Evan

I scrubbed my fingers through my hair, taking as fast a shower as possible. I’d overslept. My dreams were so vivid I hadn’t even heard my alarm. The truth was I hadn’t wanted to wake up. The visions of Mariah after she’d watched me shift yesterday had replayed themselves over and over in my mind. The look of awe on her face. The way she smiled at me, like she was seeing me in a whole new light. It was something I wanted to see more of. The images of her were so true to life, I hadn’t immediately realized I was dreaming when I woke up.

I groaned as my cock stirred. Mariah was going to be here any minute, and I had to get myself under control.

It should be easy, but when she’d told me last night she was walking home alone in the dark, something had snapped inside me. My dragon was rearing up with a wave of protective furor I couldn’t begin to understand.

Mariah was my nanny. I was doing a damned admirable job of keeping my hands off her, if I did say so myself, but it was getting harder by the day. What was I thinking, asking her to stay here full time?

This was crazy, and the rational side of me knew it. So why wasn’t that message getting through to the rest of me?

As I finished showering, my mind kept going back to that moment when I’d shifted yesterday in the clearing. When I’d thought for a moment I wouldn’t be able to.

There was much more to me not shifting regularly than the laws of the city. It was easy enough to come out to the countryside and spread my wings. But when I let my dragon loose, I never knew what to expect. He was wild, untamed. It was much easier to keep him tightly leashed, to never allow him the opportunity for destruction and devastation I knew he was capable of.

Then I’d looked at Mariah as I stood there, debating. My dragon had gone crazy, the lust and need and burning desire inside me rising to a crescendo. I hadn’t fucked a woman since before Mariah came to work for me, and my control around her was wearing thin. I’d had to shift and release some of that energy, even with the risks that came with letting the animal out. The look of awe on her face afterward, and the way Sophia greeted me, had ultimately been worth the risk.

I quickly toweled off, checking my phone for the time. I had meetings all morning before the club opened, and I was going to be late if I didn’t hurry.

Grabbing my robe, I tied it loosely around my waist, then jogged down the stairs to grab some coffee. I was midway through filling the mug, however, when I heard the beeping sounds of the front door keypad.

Mariah.

I’d set her up with her own door code, but now, as she walked right in, I wondered if that was such a good idea.
